Lasik Eye Surgery

Lasik Eye Surgery

LASIK eye surgery is a popular and effective way to improve your vision. It corrects various vision problems, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Our optometrist at Broadway Eye Clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah, provides this life-changing procedure. It involves using a laser to reshape your eye's cornea, the clear front surface, to reduce your need for corrective lenses.

What Is Lasik Eye Surgery?

LASIK eye surgery is refractive surgery involving a laser to correct vision. This type of surgery is also known as photorefractive keratectomy or PRK. LASIK eye surgery can be used to treat several vision problems, including:

  • Nearsightedness - This condition means you can see objects close to you, but not those far away. Nearsightedness occurs because your cornea is too curved or your eyeball is too long.
  • Farsightedness - If you are farsighted, you see objects far away, but not those close to you. Farsightedness occurs because your cornea is too flat or your eyeball is too short.
  • Astigmatism - This occurs when your cornea is curved or your eyeball is oval-shaped. Astigmatism causes distorted vision at all distances.

How Is LASIK Eye Surgery Performed?

The first step in LASIK eye surgery is a comprehensive eye care exam. This exam will help your optometrist determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Once it has been determined that you are a good candidate, the next step is to create a map of your eye. Our eye doctor uses a device called an excimer laser to do this.

After mapping your eye, the next step is to place numbing drops in your eye. Once it's numb, a suction ring is placed on your eye. This ring holds your eye in place and prevents you from blinking during the procedure. The next step is to make an incision in your cornea. The eye doctor then uses the excimer laser to reshape your cornea. After reshaping your cornea, they will place a contact lens in your eye. This contact lens will help protect your eye while it heals. You will then be given eye drops and told to rest for a few hours. When leaving the office, our eye doctor will provide you with protective glasses.
